Abalone shell is found worldwide and is known by various names. For instance, in New Zealand it is known as Paua shell, and in some places it is called “Mutton Fish’’. Abalone is a mollusc (marine snail), and is sought after not only for the iridescent rainbow colours of the shell (known as “Mother of Pearl’), but also for the meat. Consequently, in many places, abalone is now an endangered species. It has been popular as an ornamental and jewellery item for thousands of years, and was historically used by Native Americans as coins called “whello”. Westerners used them as buttons, and later as decorations on boxes. More recently, they are popular as jewellery or metaphysical items. Other uses include meditation, as ornaments, talismans, bowls, and dishes. They are particularly popular for use with sage when clearing and cleansing a room energetically. As abalones are an endangered species, many countries have catch and size limits to allow them to reproduce and increase their numbers. Please buy responsibly and, where possible, avoid buying abalone shells that are less than 11cm long.

Metaphysical Attributes
From a metaphysical perspective, any crystal or gift from the earth that has a rainbow is believed to carry the attributes of balancing all the chakras and layers of the aura, as well as provide a ‘bridge’ for connecting to the higher realms and the ‘Fairy Kingdom’ (Angels, Guides, Guardians, Fairies, Mother Earth, Earth Elementals, Devas and so forth’). Your abalone strengths will be connected to the vibrancy of the colours on your Abalone shell. Paua shells tend to reflect more blues and greens, and will therefore be connected to the heart and throat chakras more effectively and are believed to have a gentle, nurturing and feminine energy (Goddess energy).

Purification and Protection: Purifies the Aura, (especially Emotional Body), Chakras, and the environment, and shields the Aura and the etheric body from negativity, strengthening spiritual boundaries. Crystal Care
With a hardness of 3.5, abalone shell needs to be handled with care to prevent cracking or breaking. You would be wise to remove any abalone jewellery before contact sports or swimming in chlorinated pools, or to remove bracelets when there is a risk of the abalone being knocked. Perfectly suitable for a warm water wash with detergent and a soft brush. Despite being a ‘soft’ shell, it still has some natural resilience with the larger shells, especially paua. However, all abalone shells will be sensitive to heat and fire, so if you are using your shell for purification and saging purposes, it is worth bearing this in mind. The shell will blacken and lose its iridescence if the shell comes into contact with embers or flames.
