Afghanite is a very rare blue silicate mineral discovered in Afghanistan, specifically in the Lapis Lazuli mines. It is renowned for its intense blue colour, which ranges from sky blue to navy blue, and typically forms with other sodalite-type minerals, such as Lazurite. It is usually sought after by collectors and is occasionally found as a jewellery item. While it looks very similar to lapis (at times), it tends to be more grainy and fairly brittle. It can be transparent or opaque. Another attribute of Afghanite is that it often has fluorescent properties and glows orange to yellow when held under a UV light. Iit has a glassy lustre and a hardness of about 5.5-6 on the Mohs scale. Besides Afghanistan, other deposits have been identified in Russia, Germany, Canada, Tajikistan, and the US.

Crystal Care
Afghanite is relatively soft and should be handled carefully (not placed against harder crystals) to avoid damage. Specimens are best placed in a container or cabinet to protect them against dust. Dust can be blown off with canned air, cleaned with running water, and then dried with a soft cloth. It should not be exposed to harsh chemicals, and jewellery items should avoid ultrasonic cleaners. Metaphysically, it can be cleaned and recharged by using other crystals, sound healing, incense, and other ‘energy cleansers’.
