Aegirine, sometimes called “Acmite,” is a rare iron-rich silicate. It usually forms alongside minerals like augite and hedenbergite. However, Acmite is a fibrous green form of aegirine. Aegirine is primarily found in Norway. It tends to have a glassy lustre and is also found in Australia. It is usually transparent or opaque and slightly ‘resinous’, with a dark green to greenish black colour, although it can be found in reddish brown or black. Aegirine was named after the Norse god of the sea, and deposits have been found in Greenland as well.

Crystal Care
With a hardness of 6, Aegirine is fairly robust and can cope with water immersion. If a deeper cleansing is required, it can be washed with lukewarm water. While it's best to avoid exposure to chemicals, it can be cleaned with a soft brush and organic soapy water when used as a jewellery item. It is not suited to exposure to harsh, direct sunlight, as the colour can fade over time. It can be damaged if dropped, so care must be taken when handling. Because it often forms needle-like structures, specimens can accumulate dust and debris. The best way to remove the dust is with canned air, to ensure the needles are not damaged. When storing your aegirine, be mindful to keep it away from other hard stones to avoid scratching, and store it in a way that protects its structure. Metaphysically, aegirine can be cleared and recharged with running water (preferably from a stream or naturally occurring water body) and by smudging with incense or sage, or purification plants. Placing it out on a full moon, or ‘earthing it’ by placing it in the garden, or through the use of sound, such as bowls and tuning forks.
