Allophane is an interesting crystal that comes in a range of colours. It is a form of aluminium silicate clay that forms in volcanic ash and soils. It is classified as a mineraloid rather than a true mineral because of its structure. It is usually found alongside volcanic glass and feldspars. It is particularly soft, with a hardness of 2.8-3 on the Mohs scale, and is often mistaken for crystals such as chrysocolla, turquoise, opal, kaolinite, and smithsonite. It has a waxy lustre and an almost powdery form, and a coin can easily scratch and mark it. It is popular with collectors and metaphysicians, but buyers should be aware that many fakes and synthetic or dyed replicas are sold as authentic. Typically, you can find allophane in cabochons and similar jewellery forms. It is not particularly suitable for carving unless sealed and treated, as it is too unstable due to its softness. Allophane is found worldwide, with important deposits in Austria, the Czech Republic, France, Germany, Italy, Slovakia, Spain, the UK, and the U.S.

Metaphysical Attributes

Metaphysically, allophane is believed to have a subtle energy that offers internal peace and serenity. Its influences are directly related to your specimen's colour and the chakra associated with that colour. If your specimen has streaks, the colour of the streaks and any other inclusions will also be influential and linked to a chakra. For instance, blue allophane contains traces of copper, which gives it its blue hues; copper is metaphysically believed to be a master energy conductor that bridges the physical body and the aura at higher spiritual frequencies, grounding and connecting higher energies to the Gaia and Earth Core influences. Red allophane, also called Crimson, gets its colour from the inclusion of iron, and iron is metaphysically associated with protection, grounding, strength, boundaries, and a renewed sense of the warrior, knowing when to fight and when to sit still. Vibrant-coloured allophane is the most popular.

Crystal Care

With a hardness of 2.8–3 on the Mohs scale, allophane is extremely soft and not suitable for handling (unless held gently in the hands for meditation); you would not use it as a worry or fidget stone. While it can be stabilised through sealing, it is not suitable for water immersion or water-immersion elixirs, as water can compromise the specimen's integrity; it may also contain toxic minerals. If your specimen needs cleaning, wipe it with a damp cloth, then dry it immediately with a soft, lint-free towel. If you have jewellery, avoid prolonged soaking, heat, and ultrasonic cleaners, as these can damage your specimen. Better still - keep it protected behind a display cabinet or wrapped in a soft cloth when not in use. Avoid placing polished crystals against rough or raw crystals to prevent scratching. Like many coloured crystals, direct sunlight can negatively affect the crystal (structurally or in the vibrancy of the colour). Selenite is a good option for clearing and recharging your crystals, especially if you have a charging plate or a polished selenite log.

Suitable alternatives for clearing and charging your Allophane include smudging with sage, cedar, juniper or palo santo, or using other cleansing and purifying herbs and aromatherapy oils; sound healing with tuning forks, crystal or Tibetan bowls and bells, and sound drumming; energy healing; or placing it on another crystal with clearing and cleansing attributes. Earthing by placing it outside in a sheltered part of the garden is also a suitable way to cleanse and recharge it. A good strategy is to place it in a ceramic pot and expose it to moonlight or filtered sunlight for a few hours or overnight for gentle cleansing; make sure the soil is not moist, and avoid dew. Earthing allows the stone's energy to reconnect with Mother Earth's natural energy, reinvigorating and revitalising crystals that have become drained. Other methods for cleansing, clearing, and charging your crystals include visualisation, seeing a bright, pure white light surround the crystal and clear it of any negative energies to restore it to its natural energetic state, or using healing modalities such as reiki to cleanse and recharge it.
