Orca Agate, also known as Orca Stone, is a chalcedony variety found only in Madagascar and forms in masses. It is a cryptocrystalline quartz, meaning it is made up of tiny quartz crystals not visible to the naked eye. It forms in veins or fissures within basalt or volcanic rock, near hot springs, and can contain opal, an amorphous form of silica. Several names, including Ocean or Whale Agate, are used for Orca. The name “Orca Agate” is a trademark for the Madagascar variety. This stone is black or bluish grey, with grey and white banding or swirls that mimic the patterns and colours of an orca whale. The distinctive banding results from varying silica composition, pH levels, and other chemical properties during formation. In the latter part of the 2010s, Orca Agate began appearing at international gem shows worldwide. The crystal community found it fascinating because of its unique appearance and pattern. Interest also grew because of how it was crafted—flames and twists —which were not readily available on the market until then. Red Orca Agate is found in Madagascar. In some places, Orca Agate is known as Snow Agate. Calling Orca Agate an agate is a misnomer because it is not technically an agate; it is a quartz chalcedony. Mines mine it by hand using traditional techniques.

Crystal Care
Orca Agate is fairly durable, with a hardness of 6.5-7, and is suitable for carving. It can withstand most treatments, including water immersion, and is not believed to contain toxic minerals. As with most crystals, if your agate gets dusty or grimy, you can usually safely wash it with tepid water and an organic cleaner, then dry it with a soft cloth. Prolonged exposure to water may destabilise the stone's integrity. You would need to ensure that you don’t place your polished crystals against ‘rough’ or ‘raw’ crystals to protect them from scratching. As with most coloured crystals, they can fade when exposed to sustained sunlight, so, particularly in countries such as Australia, you would restrict their time outdoors or place them in an area with filtered sunlight. Selenite is a great option for clearing and recharging your crystals - especially if you have a charging plate or selenite log.
Suitable alternatives for clearing and charging your Orca Agate include smudging with sage, cedar, juniper or palo santo (or other cleansing and purifying herbs and aromatherapy oils), sound healing (with tuning forks, crystal or Tibetan bowls and bells, sound drumming), energy healing, or placing it on another crystal with clearing and cleansing attributes, such as a selenite charging plate. Earthing by placing it outside in a sheltered part of the garden is also a suitable method of cleansing and recharging; a good strategy could be to place it in a ceramic potted plant and expose it to moonlight or filtered sunlight for a few hours or overnight for ‘gentle cleansing’. Earthing allows the stone energy to reconnect with the natural energy of “Mother Earth’ and reinvigorate and revitalise crystals that have become ‘drained’. Other methods for cleansing, clearing, and charging your crystals can include visualisation (seeing a bright, pure white light surrounding the crystal and clearing it of any negative energies to restore it to its natural energetic state) or using healing modalities such as reiki to cleanse and recharge it. Toxicity: None known, but it may contain trace minerals, so it is not suitable for direct water immersion as an elixir.
