What is the Hearts Desire?

Soul Urge

About

In Numerology, the Soul Urge (also known more currently as the “Heart's Desire Number”) is calculated from the vowels in a name (A, E, I, O, U). If there are no vowels in a name (such as Lyn, Ty, Bryn), then the Y is calculated as a vowel (because it is a replacement vowel). Vowels are considered the ‘soul’ of a word (all words); they put feelings into any word, and singers and actors use them to know where to place emphasis. The vowels in a person's name are closely tied to the individual and offer insight into spiritual sensitivities, fortitude, drive, and desires expressed through emotions and yearnings. The Soul Urge reveals a person's deepest desires, secret longing and emotional motivations. It shows what a person really wants that defies fears or logic, and it can offer insight into why people have chosen the paths they have taken (career and relationships) and guide a person toward inner peace, happiness, and fulfilment. It is the aspect of self generally kept hidden from the world, and only those who know it intimately see it.

NOTE: Numerology isn't fixed or rigid; it is an interplay, so when doing your numerology, avoid black-and-white thinking and use the information as a tool for reflection. If you feel drawn to changing your name, and it helps you feel better and find inner peace and harmony, then it's appropriate for you. Also, it would be unwise for a person to make their life decisions based purely on the information given in the charts. Decisions should be carefully weighed up before action.

Considerations and Tips

Professionals debate how to calculate a person's Soul Urge. Some schools of thought believe it should be the value of the vowels in ALL the names on the Birth Certificate. Others believe that if the name is not used in daily activity and interaction, it should be disregarded, because letters and numbers have a frequency or vibration, and if it is not in use, it won’t vibrate. Basically, you are encouraged to do your own test of the names and soul urge. Try calculating it on the full name, for example Robin Joseph Peters. Then Robin might be known by friends and acquaintances as “Rob”, “Robbie”, or “Bob”, so you would do the soul urge on the name that is used. Other times ‘Robin’ might be the legal first name, but many families have a father carrying the same name as a son, so they use the second name for the child. Legally Robbie might be known as Robin Joseph Peters, but socially and within the family he may be called Joseph, and with his friends “Joe”. Dr David Phillips states that you should do the Soul Urge calculation only on the name used; in this case, he would recommend calculating the Soul Urge on the name Joe only. However, if Joe is called Joseph at home (by his parents and siblings) or if the names Joe and Joseph are interchangeable and both in use, you would calculate both, if only for an activity of interest. Sometimes the Soul Urge is the same for interchangeable names; other times, it reveals distinct differences in the entire personality. Anah recalls doing the soul urge and outer expression for a person that showed two distinct personalities for the Outer Expression based on the use of the First name (and it was a very accurate distinction and a case where the name change to a familiar name “Bluey” would have been recommended as a first option.

Calculating the Soul Urge

Before you start calculating your name, choose a chart or method. All the content on this website uses the Pythagorean Alphabet with numbers. Start by establishing your Soul Urge (sum of vowels), then your Outer Expression (sum of consonants), then the Destiny Number (sum of vowels and consonants together). Once you have these clear, then you can look at things like the Attitude and Maturity numbers. NOTE: Remember that a comprehensive report will take into account the primary influences of the Ruling Number, the Day Number, and whether there are Master and Power Numbers. Then there is the comparison with the Birth Chart and the Name Chart.

Steps:

  1. Write your full birth name.

  2. Identify all vowels.

  3. Convert each vowel to its number value.

  4. Add the vowel values for each name separately.

  5. Add the subtotals together and reduce to a single digit, or stop at 11

Example: ROBIN JOSEPH SMITH

(SUM OF VOWELS ONLY).

ROBIN: R +O(6)+B+I(9)+N=15→ 1+5=6
JOSEPH: J+O(6)+S+E(5)+P+H=11→ 1+1=2
SMITH: S+M+I(9)+T+H=9
Total: 6+ 2+ 9= 17→ 1+7 = 8

The Soul Urge of Robin Joseph Smith is a 8

Example: ROBBIE JOSEPH SMITH

ROBBIE: R +O(6)+B+B+I(9)+E(5)=20→ 2+0=2
JOSEPH: J+O(6)+S+E(5)+P+H=11→ 1+1=2
SMITH: S+M+I(9)+T+H=9
Total: 2+ 8+ 6= 16→ 1+6= 7

The Soul Urge of Bob Joseph Smith is a 7

Example: BOB JOSEPH SMITH

BOB: B+O(6)+B→ 6
JOSEPH: J+O(6)+S+E(5)+P+H=11→ 1+1=2
SMITH: S+M+I(9)+T+H=9
Total: 6+ 2+ 9= 17→ 1+7 = 8

The Soul urge of Bob Joseph Smith is a 8

Soul Urge Numbers

Soul Urge 1

Only names with a single vowel 'A' have a soul urge of 1. For example, Jan or Jack. Soul Urge 1 brings a sense of freedom in self-expression, but how it shows up depends on the person's ruling number. Generally, these people need a balanced life that allows enough personal time for artistic expression, since they often hold back from speaking their mind. For instance, someone with a ruling number of 3, 6, or 9; a strong mind plane in their birth chart; or an air sign might express themselves through writing. Those with more active ruling numbers like 1, 4, or 7, or a strong physical plane, may prefer hands-on activities such as gardening, cooking, carpentry, or sculpting. Emotional ruling numbers like 2, 5, and 7, or a strong spiritual or feelings plane, might be drawn to creative outlets like painting or music—anything that makes them feel truly alive.

Soul Urge 2

A Soul Urge of 2 happens when the sum of the vowel numbers is 2 or 20. People with this urge want to act from a place of balance and make sure everything they do feels harmonious. They are usually very intuitive and prefer natural settings and genuine people. Fairness matters a lot to them, so they treat others fairly and expect the same in return.

Soul Urge 3

Soul Urge 3 shows up when the vowel numbers add up to 3, 12, or 21. This urge focuses on the mind and thinking, blending feelings with thoughts and logical processes. People with this urge can quickly and effectively understand people and situations.

Soul Urge 4

Soul Urge 4 appears when the vowels in a name add up to 4 or 13. People with this urge tend to have traditional views on spiritual and emotional topics and often take a conventional approach to life. They usually stay calm and do not react emotionally.

Soul Urge 5

This soul urge comes up when the vowel numbers add up to 5 or 14. It brings strong emotional depth and a greater need for freedom and acceptance. No matter the situation, someone with a soul urge of 5 will want to express their strong feelings, unless something in their birth chart holds them back, like the Arrow of Hypersensitivity.

Soul Urge 6

People with a soul urge of 6 feel a strong need for love and creativity. They should seize opportunities to express their creative abilities (at home or at work) and find ways to show love and care. If not, there is a tendency to become over-anxious, in which case it can manifest as depression and despair, where they feel mentally tormented.

Soul Urge 7 appears when the vowels add up to 7 or 16. People with this urge are driven to teach, support, and help others. They often struggle to accept advice or guidance, which can cause them pain until they realise life is about both teaching and learning: “for every student I have ever ‘taught’ I have learned in multitudes.”

Soul Urge 7

Soul Urge 8 is found when the vowel numbers add up to 8 or 17. People with this urge may distance themselves from things they see as unreasonable or illogical. They strongly value independence, individual thinking, and freedom of expression. They must avoid coming across as arrogant or distant and learn to be part of society without feeling restricted.

Soul Urge 8

When people with a soul urge of 9 are at their best, they work to improve life for others and are guided by a strong sense of responsibility and care for humanity. If they are not balanced, they may become overly ambitious and idealistic, which can lead to self-centred and often unsuccessful efforts. They must respect the power of this soul urge, stay emotionally detached from results, and focus on action rather than getting stuck on outcomes. Otherwise, they may become trapped in the process and feel burdened by their efforts.

Soul Urge 9

Soul Urge 10

Soul Urge 10 happens when the vowels add up to 10 or 19. This gives a person more metaphysical flexibility and the chance to use psychic gifts like clairvoyance, clairaudience, telepathy, and astral projection. These abilities can help overcome the limits that society puts on personal expression. By using these gifts in daily life, people can feel less restricted, have greater freedom to help themselves, and help others become more aware of life's deeper meaning.

Soul Urge 11

This soul urge appears only when the vowels add up to 11. It brings strong intuitive abilities, which can help balance people who do not have these gifts in their birth chart or ruling number. It also helps increase compassion and sensitivity to others' feelings.
