Amber
Healing Overview
Key Attributes: Master Healer, Emotional Mastery, Creativity, Gaia, Ancestral Wisdom, Power, Empowerment
Chakras:

Amber is fossilised tree resin that preserves prehistoric insect or plant matter. It is extremely soft, measuring 2–2.5 on the Mohs Scale, and comes in a range of colours, including yellow-orange, brown, pale lemon yellow, red, and nearly black. Some green and blue amber exists, but it is extremely rare. Amber should be translucent, transparent, or opaque, and contain insect or plant matter. Amber from Ukraine (Baltic Amber) is the most desirable and considered the best quality. Most amber on the market comes from places such as Colombia and Madagascar, which makes it too young to be considered genuine amber, because genuine amber needs to be at least 100,000 years old. The oldest amber recovered dates back 320 million years to the Carboniferous period. Most amber on the market is 33.9 to 59 million years old, so it is still very old and suitable for metaphysical practitioners and purposes. Amber from the Dominican Republic ranges from 23 to 5.3 million years old, and Mexican amber ranges from 15 to 23 million years old. Amber is also sourced from places such as Myanmar, although this form is usually cloudy, and Canada has amber with preserved insects and plant matter. Blue amber is primarily sourced from Italy. Lebanon has some of the oldest ambers, along with Indonesia, Sumatra, and Borneo. New Zealand has a rare form of amber fossilised in the Kauri Tree.

Metaphysical Attributes
Amber is considered a Master Healer for the physical body. This may be because it is associated with the Sacral Chakra, the centre of passion, emotions, and creativity. The Sacral Chakra stores emotional imbalances, so when we recalibrate and heal it, we step into our personal power and make informed decisions that are not clouded by emotion. We become less reactive to people and events. Historically, Native American people considered amber a sacred stone and used it in spiritual ceremonies when a person was dying, the soul was in ‘transition’, or as part of funeral rites. They believed that it purified spaces and acted as a bridge between the earth and spiritual realms. Other primary attributes for metaphysicians include that amber connects a person to Gaia/Mother Earth and planetary energy, including the wisdom of ancient humans and the ancestors. When establishing the healing properties of your specimen, remember that whatever plant or insect matter is in the crystal will hold additional energy, such as the ‘wisdom’ or ‘medicine’ of the plant or insect. Spiders, for example, are weavers associated with manifestation and achievement, and they remind you to work diligently toward your goals. Because amber comes in a range of colours, wear the one most aligned with the chakra you are working on. For instance, if your goal is to overcome betrayal and rebuild trust and feelings of empowerment, use yellowish-hued amber. If it is about creativity and emotional expression, or artistic pursuits, seek predominantly orange pieces, although reddish orange works well. For anchoring, grounding, and emotional stability, select a brownish orange piece. Red/orange-coloured amber also supports behaviour change.

Crystal Care
Amber is incredibly soft (2.5 on the Mohs Scale) and requires sensitive care when handling. Never expose it to chemicals or harsh cleaning. If you have amber jewellery, remove it before swimming in chlorinated pools or salty oceans, and put it on AFTER you have applied your perfume, make-up, and lotions. If it needs cleaning, use a soft cloth dampened with tepid water and a drop of mild, organic, unscented soap. Avoid soaking amber in water for long periods, and never use ultrasonic cleaners. Be aware that much of the amber on the market has been ‘colour enhanced ’, and these colours may leach after being soaked in water. When you aren’t using your amber, wrap it in a soft cloth to protect it from contact with harder items and gems that might scratch it, and never expose your amber to heat or direct, prolonged sunlight, as this will darken it and may even result in cracks. For metaphysicians, you can clear, cleanse and recharge your amber in a variety of ways - such as exposure to the moonlight, grounding and earthing or smudging with purification incense and herbs. Crystals such as selenite and amethyst are a good option for clearing and recharging your amber. You may need to rest the amber on a soft cloth between the selenite and amethyst to protect it from damage (and to protect the amethyst points).
